Decorating eggs brings me back to my childhood… Easter meant spring was here, and summer was right around the corner.
It means…
- Easter egg hunts in the back yard
- Decorating colorful eggs
- Easter baskets with big chocolate bunnies
- Skittle jelly beans
- Peeps
- Growing up in Florida meant a new bathing suit, flip flops, beach bag, and a new towel
Speaking of bathing suits, the Florida weather is not disappointing. The sun is shining, the sky is blue, and the buds are plentiful on the crape myrtles.
The faint sounds of kids splashing in the pool are getting louder, and the urge to spruce up the patio and pool deck is whispering in my head. I have already started working on a few ideas to revamp the backyard. So stay tuned!
But first…this is what I have been working on for Spring, and I hope these ideas give you inspiration for your home and celebrating your traditions.
Once I started decorating eggs, I must confess…it was addicting.
Idea #1 Flower Eggs – A Fun Children’s Craft

This would be fun to decorate a children’s table. If you don’t set a children’s table, use the eggs without the flowers to make an elegant statement in a bowl.
Supplies:
- Crafting Eggs
- Cupcake Liners
- Bamboo Sticks – Grocery Store
- Container – Dollar Store is a great place to look or use one you already own to match your decor…
- Acrylic Paint
- Foil Kit
- Cupcake Liners
Decorated Eggs That Look Like Flowers
- Gather Eggs
- Poke Hole Bottom of Egg
The crafting eggs have a place on the bottom that allows for a small hole in which a bamboo stick can be placed to allow for easy handling of the egg and to act as a flower stem.
- Paint Eggs
Paint Eggs and bamboo sticks with acrylic paint of your choice. It took two coats to cover evenly. Place in the floral form to allow to dry.
- Foil Eggs
I used the brand Speedball which worked out well and the directions were easy to follow. First, add adhesive to the egg and allow it to become tacky. Then place foil on the surface of the egg and allow it to dry. Brush off excess foil and apply top coat.
- Allow Eggs to Dry
I didn’t want to cover the eggs completely because I wanted the color to show through.
- Glue Cupcake Lining Together
Glue the outside of the cupcake liner together (outside to outside) so the underneath is also decorative.
- Add the Cupcake Liner
Poke the bamboo stick through the middle of the cupcake liner and manipulate it to resemble flower petals. I added a ribbon for added interest.
- Prepare Container
Add floral foam to container you are using
- Add the Flowered Eggs and Cover with Shredded Paper
Idea #2 Glitter Eggs
Who doesn’t like glitter? I especially like the chunky glitter…it just makes me smile!
Supplies:

These eggs were easy and really fun to make…

I used both fine and chunky glitter (it came in a set) for added interest.

Poke a hole in the bottom of the egg and insert a bamboo stick to make it easier to hold the egg.
Next, paint a thin layer of Mod Podge onto the surface of the egg and add the glitter.
Finally, allow the eggs to dry, and that is all there is to it!

I added natural raffia to the jar and added the glittered eggs. The apothecary jar nicely displayed the eggs.
Idea #3 Pressed Flowers
The pressed flower eggs were a little delicate and tedious to make than some of the other ideas.
Supplies

As a time saver…I used crafting eggs that were colored in pale muted colors.

Add a layer of Mod Podge to the faux egg.

Next, choose which dried flowers and or leaves you want to apply to each egg.
Apply Mod Podge where the pressed flowers will be positioned.
I found using tweezers while handling the pressed flowers was beneficial because the flowers are delicate.
Once the pressed flowers are where you want them… gently add another layer of Mod Podge using a soft-bristled brush.
Replace the decorated egg into the original egg container or on a drying rack to dry.

I placed this egg into an egg holder and added a small bow. I could easily attach a tag to use in a place setting.

Another way to style…

Idea #4 – Adding Stick Ons
The ideas are endless when decorating with stick-on embellishments.
The craft store will have isles devoted to these embellishments, typically used for scrapbooking and journaling.
Supplies:
The supplies here are whatever you want them to be but here are a few suggestions…

I started going through my stash and pulled out embellishments that looked interesting. There are no rules and this is perfect for kids!

This is my favorite….in place of Family, add a name tag for your dinner table.
Idea #5 Make Your Own Egg
My final idea is to make eggs out of air dry clay.
Supplies:

The rolling pins are made to use in baking.

Roll out the clay with a rolling pin.

Use a cookie cutter to cut out the shape. I used an egg and a rabbit shape.

Next, roll the decorative rolling pin over the shape with moderate pressure. This is also the time to place a hole near the top of the egg for hanging. I used a pencil eraser…

Allow to dry overnight…

Once the clay has dried, paint with the colors of your choice.

I went out in our yard and picked a branch and decorated it with the clay eggs.

I repurposed the container from the heart-shaped topiary, which you can find in the tutorial here.
